How to Make a Logo with AI (Editable SVG, Not a PNG)

You typed a prompt, got back something that looked like a logo, and dropped it into your design tool. Then you zoomed in. Pixels. The crisp little mark turned to mush at the edges, and the file you were about to put on a sign, a T-shirt and a favicon fell apart at the first change of size.

Most AI logo generators do this. They hand you a PNG, a flat grid of coloured dots that looks fine at the size it was made and blurs the moment you scale it. Around 82,000 people a month search "AI logo generator" in the US alone, per Ahrefs, and most of them are about to be handed exactly that. For a photo, a PNG is fine. For a logo, which has to work at 16 pixels and on a billboard, it's a delivery failure waiting to happen.

Here's the fix, and the catch. Yes, AI can make a real, editable logo, but only if you use a tool that generates a true vector file, and even then it won't spell your brand name for you. This is a guide to getting the vector, dodging the traps, and knowing what you can actually own at the end.

Can AI make a real logo?

Yes and no.

Yes for the icon or mark, delivered as an editable vector you can open, recolour and resize with no loss of quality. No for a custom wordmark: image models treat letters as shapes to copy, not characters to spell, so brand names come out warped or misspelled more often than not. And "real" only counts if the file is genuine vector, not a pixel image wearing an SVG coat.

So the goal isn't "generate a logo." It's "generate a clean vector mark, set the type yourself, and check you can use it." Five stages get you there:

  1. Brief yourself in one sentence.
  2. Explore broad and cheap to find a direction.
  3. Generate the mark as a vector, not a raster.
  4. Sanity-check it before you commit.
  5. Refine it in Figma or Illustrator and export a real file set.

We'll walk each one. First, why the file format is the thing that matters most.

Why SVG beats PNG for logos

A logo has to be a vector. Not "should be", has to.

A raster file (PNG, JPG, WebP) is a fixed grid of pixels. Blow it up and the software has no more detail to show, so edges blur and blocks appear. A vector file (SVG) stores the design as mathematical paths: points, curves and fills. It redraws itself at any size, so the same file works as a 16-pixel favicon and a stadium banner with zero loss. That single property is why every studio delivers logos as vectors.

The practical test: if you can't scale it, recolour it by editing a shape, and export it clean at any size, it isn't a logo yet. It's a picture of one.

What "native SVG" and "auto-traced" actually mean

Here's what most tool pages skip. Some generators offer an "SVG export" that's really an auto-trace: after making a pixel image, software guesses the shapes and spits out an SVG stuffed with hundreds of redundant anchor points, wobbly strokes and unnamed layers. It opens in a vector editor, technically. It's close to unusable in practice.

Native vector is a different thing. The model composes directly in path space, so the output arrives with clean anchor points, editable fills and named layers you can actually work with. The difference shows up the second you open the file and try to nudge a single curve.

Which AI logo generators actually make vectors

Very few. This is the part that decides whether you get a working file or a good-looking dead end.

Recraft is the standout. Replicate's engineering team, who host the model, describe its output as "actual SVG files with real paths" rather than traced pixels. It's the only mainstream image model built to generate native vector, with clean geometry and real layers, which is exactly what a logo needs. The rest mostly make rasters. This is where a multi-model tool earns its keep. Route the mark to Recraft for the vector, a text-strong model like GPT Image or Gemini for concept exploration, and set the final type yourself. One prompt box, the right model for each job, no five subscriptions to babysit.

Step by step: concept to editable file

The workflow is a pipeline, not a single click. Skip a stage and you'll feel it later.

Brief yourself first. One sentence covering brand, feeling and colour: "minimal coffee brand, warm and earthy, modern but approachable." A vague brief produces vague clichés, so get specific before you touch a prompt.

Explore broad, then narrow. Generate a batch of rough directions with a cheap, fast model to see what the idea even looks like. This is throwaway work. You're finding a direction, not a final.

Generate the mark as a vector. In Recraft, or in JammyJar's vector setting, pick a vector or icon style, set the background transparent, and feed in your brand hex codes. Keep the design describable in one sentence. Gradients, glows and fiddly detail don't reduce to clean paths and don't survive one-colour printing, so simpler wins.

Sanity-check before you commit. This is the stage everyone skips and regrets:

  • Scale it both ways. View the mark at 16 pixels and at 500. If it dies small, it fails as a favicon.
  • Kill the colour. Does it still read in pure black on white? A logo that only works in full colour isn't finished.
  • Check for accidental twins. Reverse-image-search the mark for near-copies, since models trained on scraped art can echo an existing design.
  • Open the SVG. Look for stray background rectangles, hidden layers or a node count in the hundreds. That last one is the auto-trace tell.

Then refine. Take the clean SVG into Figma or Illustrator for the last 20%, which we'll cover next.

The limitations nobody tells you

Three of them, and the first is a dealbreaker for brand names.

AI can't spell. Image models don't read text, they pattern-match letter shapes as visual texture, which is why generated wordmarks come out melted or misspelled. The research is blunt about it: in TextDiffuser's testing, accuracy falls as the word gets longer. Ideogram, the strongest text model, is reported at roughly 90–95% accuracy against 30–50% for general models, though that figure comes from vendor and affiliate pages rather than an independent benchmark, so treat it as a claim. And 90% still means one brand name in ten comes out wrong, on the one element that has to be perfect every single time. Use AI for the mark. Set the type in a vector editor with a properly licensed font.

It loves a cliché. Ask ten generators for a coffee logo and you'll get ten takes on the same bean-and-steam. Similar prompts converge on category stock, which becomes a problem the day you want to trademark something distinctive. Designer David Airey, who wrote Logo Design Love, makes the case that a logo is a strategic decision and not just a nice picture, and a visibly generic AI mark can read as exactly that. Creative Bloq reported that when one restaurant shipped an AI logo, it drew review-bombing and a designer backlash. The reputational risk is real, even if people disagree on whether it's fair.

Cleanup is normal, not a failure. Peer-reviewed work on vector generation notes that path-based methods still produce redundant geometry and tangled shapes. Recraft's commercial output is cleaner than those research baselines, but "generate a perfect production logo in one click" isn't a thing. Budget time to tidy nodes.

None of this makes AI logos useless. It makes them a strong first 80%, with the last 20% still yours.

Refining in Figma or Illustrator

A production logo isn't a file. It's a folder.

Take the SVG into your editor and do the work the model can't: clean up stray nodes, expand strokes into solid shapes, set the real wordmark in proper type, and build the lockups you'll actually use, meaning horizontal, stacked and icon-only. Then export the set a real brand needs:

  • The master SVG, your single source of truth.
  • Transparent PNGs at a couple of sizes for slides and email.
  • A favicon set: ICO at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, an SVG, a 180-pixel Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512-pixel PNGs for the web manifest.
  • One-colour and reversed versions, for stamps, embroidery and dark backgrounds.
  • CMYK files for anything going to print.

That favicon list looks fussy until the day your site shows a blank square in the browser tab because you only ever exported a PNG. Do it once, properly, and you stop thinking about it.

The mark came from AI in a minute. The folder is an afternoon. That afternoon is the gap between a picture and a brand asset.

Can you use an AI logo commercially? Copyright versus trademark

Short version: you probably can't copyright a purely AI-made logo, but you can often trademark it. Those are two different rights, and the gap between them is where people get burned.

Copyright protects original human authorship, and pure AI output usually has none. The US Copyright Office ruled in January 2025 that human authorship is a bedrock requirement, and that prompts alone don't give a person enough control over the result to count as the author. That follows the Thaler case, where a work described as autonomously created by a computer was refused registration. The EU lands in the same spot by its own route: the CJEU's originality test asks for the author's own free and creative choices, which pure AI output can't show. The UK is the odd one out, with a 1988 provision that still grants authorship of computer-generated works for 50 years, though the government said in March 2026 that it intends to remove protection for works made solely by AI. As of August 2026 that's stated intent, not law.

Trademark doesn't care who made it. Trademark law protects signs that identify who's selling something. It has no authorship test, so how the mark was made is beside the point. What it demands instead is distinctiveness. That's the risk with generic AI output: a bean-and-steam coffee mark that ten other prompts could produce may be too plain to register, or too close to a mark that already exists. Customise it well past the raw output, run a clearance search on USPTO, UKIPO or EUIPO, use it in commerce, and keep records of what you contributed.

FAQ

Can you use an AI-generated logo commercially? Usually yes, but it turns on the tool's licence, not on copyright law. Most paid plans grant commercial rights and ownership. Many free tiers don't, and some keep your design public. Read the specific tool's terms before you put a logo on anything you sell, and prefer tools that grant clear commercial rights.

Can I trademark an AI logo? Often, yes. Trademark law has no human-authorship requirement, so an AI-made mark can be registered if it's distinctive enough and doesn't clash with an existing one. Generic output is the weak spot. Customise the mark, run a clearance search on USPTO, UKIPO or EUIPO, and use it in commerce to build up rights.

Why does the text in my AI logo look wrong? Because image models don't spell. They reproduce letters as shapes rather than characters, so wordmarks warp or misspell, especially with longer names. Use AI for the icon, then set the real brand name in a vector editor with a licensed font. Treat any AI-rendered text as a placeholder, never the final.

Should a logo be an SVG or a PNG? SVG for the logo itself. It's a vector, so it scales from a favicon to a billboard with no loss and stays editable. Keep PNGs as exports for places that only take a flat image, like email signatures or slides. The SVG stays your master file.

Do AI logo generators give you an editable file? Only some. Most output raster PNGs. A few, led by Recraft, generate native SVG with real, editable paths. An AI logo generator can absolutely give you a real, editable logo. It just has to hand you a native vector, the type has to be your job, and you have to know you can use it. Get those three right and you've turned a blurry PNG into something you can put on a sign, a favicon and a trademark application.
