AI Art Styles Glossary: 50+ Styles with Prompt Keywords

In 2022, roughly a quarter of all Stable Diffusion prompts contained the word "artstation". About one in ten carried the full spell: "trending on artstation". Nobody was describing a picture. They were chanting at one.

Then it stopped working. McCormack and colleagues went through more than three million prompts for their arXiv paper "No Longer Trending on Artstation", published in January 2024, and found those terms had fallen out of the top ten by 2023. The models had learned to read.

An AI art style keyword is a word or phrase that points a model at a visual pattern it picked up in training: a medium (watercolour), a movement (Bauhaus), a genre aesthetic (cyberpunk), a craft (die-cut sticker), or a camera treatment (bokeh). Those words still work. Their job changed. They're vocabulary now, not incantation, and the same word lands differently in Gemini, GPT Image, Recraft and Midjourney.

So below are 62 styles in alphabetical order, each with a definition, the keywords that actually steer it, and our call on which model to send it to. Before the list, three short sections: how style words behave in 2026, how to stack two of them without making mud, and why you won't find a single living artist's name in this glossary.

Style keywords are vocabulary, not spells

The 2022 way of prompting was reverse engineering, not writing. Early Stable Diffusion needed the quality words, so people bolted "4k", "8k", "unreal engine" and "trending on artstation" onto everything. The research team at Toloka went further and ran genetic optimisation with human raters to work out which keyword blocks won a head-to-head. That's how mechanical it was.

Google's own guidance for Nano Banana now says the opposite. Because Gemini's image models run on a multimodal backbone rather than a CLIP text encoder, they read creative intent as a whole, and the old quality stacks actively hurt the output. Google's advice is to brief the model like a creative director: subject, composition, action, location, style. Stability's guidance for Stable Diffusion 3 says much the same about the legacy "masterpiece, best quality" blocks, calling them artefacts of specific fine-tunes that mostly add noise on newer base models. And Andrew at ApproachableAI, writing about Midjourney, puts a number on the folklore: stuffing up to 50 keywords isn't necessary in 90% of cases.

Think of it like a kitchen. Shouting "butter, sugar, flour, 8k, award-winning" at a chef gets you something edible. Describing the cake gets you the cake.

Here's the counterargument, and it's half right: if natural language wins, why keep a keyword list at all? Because you still need the noun. "Whiplash lines", "Ben-Day dots", "risograph", "chiaroscuro" are the words for things you can see but can't name, and a model can't render a look you can't ask for. Midjourney and Recraft also still take explicit style controls, so the words have somewhere to go. Vocabulary earns its keep. Spellbooks don't.

What this looks like: name the style, then describe it in four attributes: medium, palette, texture, light. "Die-cut sticker of a jam jar, thick white border, glossy vinyl, flat raspberry and cream palette, hard even light" will beat fourteen comma-separated adjectives in every model we run.

How to read this glossary

Every entry carries three things: a definition in one or two lines, a keyword set you can paste and edit, and a routing note. Each style is also tagged with one of seven buckets and marked core or niche, because "cyberpunk" and "hardvapour" are not the same size of demand and you should spend your time accordingly.

The seven buckets, previewed before we expand any of them:

• Art-historical movements: Impressionism, Cubism, Bauhaus, Ukiyo-e, Pop Art.
• Traditional mediums: watercolour, charcoal, gouache, linocut, ink wash.
• Illustration and graphic: flat design, line art, isometric, logo marks, vector.
• Photographic and cinematic: photorealism, film noir, golden hour, product shots.
• Digital and 3D: pixel art, low-poly, voxel, glitch, glossy renders.
• Genre aesthetics: cyberpunk, vaporwave, solarpunk, cottagecore, weirdcore.
• Craft and material: die-cut sticker, papercut, claymation, stained glass, embroidery.

A word on the routing notes. They're our calls, not vendor claims, based on what these four models are built to do and what we get back when we run the same brief through all of them. Where a note says Recraft, it's usually because you want a real vector file or a repeatable design system. Where it says Midjourney, it's because the look is painterly and the aesthetic matters more than obedience.

We also only cover the four we work with daily. Ideogram and FLUX handle style well and aren't in these notes, because we haven't tested them side by side often enough to have an opinion worth publishing.

One more thing, said plainly. The style lists dominating this search are mostly copies of each other. ZSky's guides state they're drafted with AI assistance. Zapier's 70-style piece is good and dates from 2023, before the model behaviour above changed. Aiarty's list was updated on 24 May 2026 and cites MoMA properly, then gives you no model guidance at all. That gap is the reason this page exists.

The style dialect table. A "style dialect" is how a given model expects style to arrive: as prose, as a parameter, as a preset, or as a file. Get the dialect wrong and the style word gets ignored.

Recraft shipped over 20 named style presets on V3 and keeps that library approach in the V4.1 family, which is why it behaves less like a prompt box and more like a design system. Midjourney's --sw is the dial worth learning: at 100 you get a nudge, at 900 the reference eats your subject.

Anime cel shading

Flat colour blocks with hard-edged shadows and confident ink outlines, borrowed from Japanese television animation. The 90s variant is grainier and warmer than the current one.

Two paints blend, four make mud

Every source we trust lands on the same number: two styles is the sweet spot, three is the ceiling. Past that, the model averages your instructions into something generic, and generic is the one thing you can't fix in post.

Pairs work when the two styles control different things. Watercolour plus cyberpunk works because one owns the medium and the other owns the subject. Art Deco plus science fiction works because one owns the geometry and the other owns the content. Baroque plus dark fantasy shares a lighting philosophy. Ukiyo-e plus a modern city keeps the technique and swaps the century.

On weighting: Midjourney lets you set relative weights with :: and tune each style reference with --sw from 0 to 1000. Everywhere else, natural language does the job better than syntax. "Primarily photorealistic with a few surreal elements" lands more reliably in Gemini and GPT Image than any weighted token soup, which is the same lesson as the artstation story, one abstraction level up.

Try the pair, then kill one. If the second style isn't clearly earning its place in the output, it's costing you fidelity in the first.

Name it, show it, or save it

There are only three ways to give a model a style, and picking the wrong one is where most of the wasted generations go.

Name it when the style is well known and you want variety. Every entry above is a name. Typing "ukiyo-e" gets you 90% of the way in one word, and the remaining 10% comes from describing the palette and the linework.

Show it when the style is specific, proprietary, or you can't name it. This covers brand looks, a photographer's particular palette, an existing illustration set you have to match. Midjourney does it with --sref and a style weight. Recraft lets you build a custom style from up to five reference PNGs and then reuse the resulting style_id on every call. GPT Image handles it if you label the roles explicitly, so "Image 1 = the product, Image 2 = the style" rather than hoping it guesses. Gemini does it conversationally: show it, then say keep everything the same except the subject.

Save it when you'll need the look forty more times. This is the part keyword lists never solve. Neolemon puts the complaint well: people's AI characters keep looking like they were drawn by different artists. That's not a keyword problem, it's a persistence problem. Reference codes, saved styles and workspace-level Themes exist because retyping seven adjectives from memory produces seven slightly different looks.

We don't list artist names, and neither should you

Every big style list you'll find leans on artist names, because for two years that was the strongest lever in prompting. It isn't any more, on three separate counts.

It often gets refused. OpenAI added a refusal that fires when someone asks for an image in the style of a living artist, while still permitting broader studio styles, as reported in March 2025. Artists who died a long time ago, the Van Gogh and Monet end of the shelf, are generally still fine. A working illustrator's name is a coin flip you don't need to take.

It's evidence in live litigation. The "Midjourney Style List" filed as an exhibit in Andersen v. Stability AI in November 2023 catalogued more than 4,700 artist names the tool could imitate, with roughly 15,800 more listed as proposed additions. That case is still moving: Judge Orrick dismissed most claims in October 2023 but let the direct copyright claim against Stability proceed, further claims (including against Midjourney) were allowed to advance in August 2024, the DMCA section 1202 claims were dismissed with prejudice on 12 August 2024, and a third amended complaint was reported in February 2026. As of August 2026 none of it is settled. In the UK, the High Court handed down Getty Images v Stability AI on 4 November 2025, a 205-page judgment that largely rejected Getty's copyright case, holding that model weights are not an infringing copy, while finding limited trademark infringement over reproduced watermarks. Two jurisdictions, two different answers, one clear signal: don't build your workflow on it.

And it's the weaker technique anyway. An artist's name is a bundle of decisions you can't take apart. "Whiplash lines, muted jewel palette, botanical border" is the same look with the dials exposed, and it works in every model instead of some of them.

Use movements, techniques, materials, studio styles and your own reference images. That's the whole list of things nobody has to argue about in court.

Turn the style you like into a Theme

Somewhere around the fifth generation, a style stops being a word and becomes a spec. You've settled on the palette, the light, the texture and the framing, and now you need the next thirty images to obey all four.

ZSky reports that a similar cluster of thirteen styles accounts for more than 60% of style-related prompts on its own platform, though that's a vendor's first-party figure rather than an independent count.

Can I combine two AI art styles in one prompt?

Yes, and two is the number to aim for. Three is the ceiling. Combinations work when each style controls a different layer, like watercolour (medium) plus cyberpunk (subject), and fail when both compete for the same one, like oil paint plus watercolour. Why won't the model copy my favourite artist's style?

Name one style, then describe four attributes: medium, palette, texture and light. That's typically five to fifteen words of style instruction total.

Which model handles a specific art style best?
